THE CHALLENGE
Loss of Load Carriers in a Non-Transparent Customer Cycle without Asset Tracking
With over 1,000 DPD Pickup parcelshops and 13 depots, DPD (Switzerland) AG operates a comprehensive network for national and international shipping solutions. The service also includes roll containers for more than 4,500 business customers. However, these containers, worth €600–700, regularly disappeared from the customer cycle without asset tracking.
The lack of transparency made it impossible to know how many containers were with customers, how long they had been standing there unused, or whether they were intact. In addition, customers used surplus containers for other purposes.
The consequences: missing containers, inaccurate inventory management, and increasing planning costs. Although the procurement quantity was known, there was no process reliability regarding actual use and condition.
Simplicity as the Key to Efficient Logistics Processes
The straightforward handling of the system without operational burdens convinced the company: reliable overviews are generated automatically without manual input. Paper and delivery notes are eliminated, and training requirements are minimized: intelligent automation makes manual input unnecessary.
The implementation includes Digital Matter‘s IoT-enabled Barra Edge tracking devices, which are combined with QR codes and the BOX ID software modules Base and Analytics.
Thanks to the unique ID of each roll container, inventory at customers and in hubs can now be checked at any time. The analytics function defines threshold values so that subsequent deliveries can be triggered in good time before bottlenecks arise at customer locations.
Sustainable Success with Digitalization and Smart Asset Management
The results are visible after only a short time: drastically reduced losses lead to significant cost savings, as fewer roll containers need to be replaced. Complete transparency across a total of 800 load carriers enables faster scheduling and better planning, which ensures security of supply for customers.
The collaboration with the BOX ID team is rated particularly positively: the introduction was quick and uncomplicated, with direct communication on eye level and rapid implementation by the experienced team.
Asset Tracking as Future-Proof Investment in Transparent Logistics Processes
This success story shows how IoT tracking and digitized load carrier management are revolutionizing logistics processes. Using GPS and QR code technology as well as user-friendly software, the company increased efficiency and customer service. The investment in intelligent container management quickly pays off through lower losses and stronger customer relationships.
"The BOX ID system impresses us with its user-friendliness. It provides reliable data without any additional effort for our teams. This allows us to track our assets and proactively supply our customers with load carriers."
